Europa - underwater fauna and flora
Seen from above, water is just water. However, when we dive into it, it is possible to discover a diversity of environments and ecosystems as rich as those on land.
Utricularia
Utricularia vulgaris L. is a perennial submerged plant from the Lentibulariaceae family. LentibulariaceaeIt has a branched stem that floats freely in the water without developed real roots, and can reach two meters in length. The leaves are numerous, 1-5 cm long. They mostly branch into two parts at the base, and then they branch unequally dichotomously several times. They are very pointed at the ends. The leaves have characteristic blisters that are used to catch prey, which makes this species a carnivorous group. The bubbles are filled with air, they are closed with a cover with sensitive hairs. When the prey comes into contact with the hairs, the cap opens and the plant captures the prey. This is followed by the process of releasing enzymes and digesting the prey. The flowers are upright, 10-30 cm long. They consist of 3-12 yellow flowers that protrude above the water. Blooms from April to August. The species is widespread in stagnant and slow-flowing waters. It is a strictly protected species in our country, because its populations are threatened by habitat loss.
Tench
Tench (Tinca tinca Linnaeus, 1758) is a freshwater fish from the carp family. It has a moderately elongated body and rounded fins. The body is covered with tiny scales that are deep in the thick, very slimy skin. The color varies from brown to green and depends on the habitat. Red eyes stand out on the head and one small tentacle (whiskers) on the side of the mouth. It reaches a length of 60 cm and a weight of 6 kg. Tench is a slow-moving fish of stagnant and slow-flowing waters with a muddy bottom. It feeds on bottom fauna and plants. It spawns in shallow water during the summer months. It is a widespread species in our country, but it is also strictly protected. It is protected because of overexploitation, as well as because of the endangered habitats it inhabits.
