International Chess Federation (FIDE) was founded in Paris in 1924. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognizes FIDE as the supreme body responsible for the expansion and improvement of chess culture, international cooperation, and the organization of chess and chess championships on a global and continental level.
Even before the establishment of FIDE, chess existed as a competitive sport for centuries. Originally from India and the surrounding Asian countries, chess has undergone a series of changes in its more than 2,000-year-long history, the rules of which were established in the 15th century. In earlier times, there were no general chess laws or uniform rules for international competitions; the only rule was that chess was a classy sport where a certain etiquette and beauty of the game was expected from the players.
FIDE makes chess rules, and its most visible activity is the organization of the International Chess Championship since 1948. FIDA also organizes international championships for women, juniors, seniors and people with disabilities. Another flagship event is the Chess Olympiad, a biennial chess tournament organized since 1924, in which national teams compete. In alternate years, FIDA also organizes the International Team Championship, where the best teams from the previous Olympics compete. It awards the international chess titles of Grandmaster, International Masters, FIDE Masters, Women's Grandmasters, Women's International Masters, Women's FIDE Masters, International Judges and other titles.
Today, FIDE, with 161 member countries, is one of the most dynamic sports organizations in the world. It unites women and men of different races, religions and political beliefs in the common goal of developing chess among millions of chess players around the world. The purpose and goal of FIDE is the spread and development of chess among all the nations of the world, as well as the raising of chess culture and knowledge on a sport, scientific, creative and cultural basis.
