Our country is one of the very few in Europe where there are still rainforest systems. We consider rainforests to be forests created naturally, which grew, lived, renewed and died according to the laws of nature without any human intervention. In rainforests there are trees of all heights, thicknesses and ages, from the youngest to the oldest. New life flourishes on the remains of naturally dead trees. Today, our rainforests are unusually valued as very rare natural phenomena in Europe, because in the vast majority of European countries they have long disappeared. In rainforests, all organisms are interconnected in the natural food chain and life in general. It is not possible to take anything from the rainforest without disturbing its natural balance.
The Janj Rainforest was declared a strict nature reserve in 2012 and has enjoyed the highest level of protection since then. This protected area was granted the status of a natural asset of global importance in 2021, by being inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The reserve is located on the western slopes of the Stolovas massif in the Sipovo municipality. In the Janj Rainforest, no one cuts down trees or removes fallen trunks. Trees grow, age, die and rot naturally. This cycle nourishes the soil and creates a home for numerous species of birds, insects and fungi. The climate is mountainous, characterized by the collision of maritime and continental air masses, with an average annual temperature of 6.5 degrees, an annual precipitation rate of 1200 mm and a growing season of 140-200 days. The beech and fir-spruce community is dominant at 95%. Several species of permanently protected mammals, birds, and plant species with high biological value live in the rainforest.
Human impact is reduced to the minimum possible. Any forest management is strictly prohibited, which preserves the original genetic fund and enables the undisturbed development of nature. A first-level protection regime has been established in the entire area of the strict nature reserve "Janj Rainforest". Activities and actions that may damage the properties for which they were declared a natural asset of world importance are not allowed in the reserve (picking and destroying plants, killing, capturing and disturbing animals, introducing new species, land reclamation, various forms of economic use).
